What second rate airline did she fly to the mainland? Obviously China’s President wanted this visit to be seen as a meeting between political parties and not a meeting between states. I hope they are able to find peace in spite of the DPP holding the Presidency of the Republic of China.

Fred, the KMT has always and vocally opposed “Taiwan independence”. What I think is more interesting to note here is how dovish Xi has been sounding. It sends a strong signal to Trump that he’s willing to de-escalate. Perhaps something is in the works for the May 14 trip?

Thanks, but I don't think it's a designed de-escalation message targeting Trump. Despite some Chinese experts suggesting a potential deal. But considering the lack of pre-meeting communication(or maybe just I can't see it), I'd prefer to look at it in a more skeptical way

Your use of “de-escalate” makes me think we view the situation very differently. The goal for both Xi and Cheng is to restore the 1992 peace accords which were trashed in 2016 by the DPP.

Nothing has been escalated which can then be de-escalated.

I get the impression folks in the West are watching a game of chess but are unaware that they are seeing a game of chess. They write descriptions of how the players are seated and predict when one player will grab the other….it is chess, not wrestling.

The interesting part here is Beijing’s attempt to shift the argument away from regime type and back to civilizational identity.

“Democracy vs authoritarianism” is being treated as secondary; the real claim is that identity comes first, and that political form is downstream of national belonging.

That’s a deeper move than ordinary messaging. It’s an attempt to set the ontology of the conflict before negotiating any of its terms.

I think Zheng is referring to the Taiwan 民族解放, she's not particularly emphasizing the "Taiwan Minzu" but the ethnic liberation in Taiwan
