Until the U.S. government polls its citizens about whether they would prefer this policy to a more constructive, win-win approach that eschewed hegemony (and I believe they would), there is no reason for the Chinese to take it too seriously.

Really interesting take on the shift from ideological confrontation to what you call "technological Machiavellianism." The Nixon-Trump parallel is especially sharp considering how strategic retrechment can masquerade as weakness but actually sets up more durable competition mechanics. The point about learning Chinese development models to counter China itself is fascianting, particularly the whole-nation system for tech concentration. If the US actually adopts incremental centralization with realist ruthlessness, that's a longer game than most people wanna admit.
